Are your tires spinning?


Are your tires spinning?

In the winter, if your car can’t get traction on an icy patch, your tires will spin and spin when you accelerate.  If you get really freaked out about being stuck on the icy road and keep stomping on the accelerator, do you get more traction?  Does your car move forward?  Not usually.

How about when you’re feeling stuck on a project?  How about when you feel like YOUR tires are spinning?  Do you find yourself pushing harder and harder in an attempt to get unstuck?  Hmmm, is that working for you?  Most of my clients confess that it only makes them feel LESS motivated to work on the project.  Most of the time, they don’t get unstuck by continuing to push hard.  They just feel more overwhelmed.

Handle with Care

The baby is wailing at the top of her lungs.  She was sleeping peacefully.  Now she’s wide awake and crying away.

That’s what you hear coming through the baby monitor at your friend’s house.  The two of you are chatting away, when your visit is interrupted by the sounds of the baby.  What happens next?

You’re at the office with a to-do list a mile long, plus an urgent project from your boss.  In fact, you’re expected at a meeting for that project in 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, your head cold has moved into your chest.  You’re worn out from coughing.  You really need to make an appointment with your physician.  Today.  What happens next?

When the baby started crying, what happened next?  Do you think her mother stopped what she was doing, went to her child, and soothed her?  I sure do.
